In LA., Martindale carved a place for himself as one of the city's most popular personalities, with successful radio programs on KRLA, KFWB, and KMPC, and TV shows on KHJ and KTLA. By the mid- sixties, after years of hosting radio and TV music programs, Martindale felt a change was due.
"I'd been a deejay since I was 17 years old. My roots were in radio, but I thought it would be fun to try my hand in another area. I thought, I love games. Why don't I start auditioning and see if I might land a job as a game show host?" He hit pay dirt with his very first audition. "What's This Song," a musical show with celebrities on NBC, was a perfect fit. "After a couple of weeks, I felt as if I'd been doing this all my life."
In the years since "What's This Song," Martindale has hosted an impressive array of shows, including "Can You Top This," "Trivial Pursuit," and popular favorites such as "Gambit," "Tic-Tac-Dough" and "High Rollers." In 1985 he added the title of "producer" to his resume with the syndicated "Headline Chasers," in association with Merv Griffin and KingWorld, and has since produced several real-time interactive shows for The Family Channel, including "Boggle" and "Jumble," among others.
Most recently Martindale hosted the ground-breaking show "Debt" for Disney's Buena Vista Productions on the Lifetime cable network, winning a CableACE Award for best game show after its initial season.
Returning to his roots, since 1996, Martindale has hosted a daily, 3-hour radio show, "Music Of Your Life." The show features Wink's extensive library of celebrity interviews culled from his years in radio, and popular music from the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's. Martindale produces the show in his state-of-the-art studio at home
Martindale shows no signs of slowing his pace. "Retirement" isn't in his vocabulary. "What keeps me going and what keeps me interested is that ever present but elusive carrot out there. Can I find another winning game show? Is there another "Gambit" or "Tic-Tac-Dough" out there just waiting for what I have to offer? I love working. I love the challenge. It's still an interesting world to me.
When not working, Martindale lives in Calabasas, California with his wife of 25 years, Sandy, and their Chihuahuas. Wink has four grown children and seven grandchildren.
